Table Saw Buying Checklist
A printable one-page checklist for choosing a table saw: type, specifications, safety features and accessories.
Use this list before you spend money on a table saw. Print it with your browser’s print option and tick items off as you compare models.
1. Define the job
- ☐ What will you cut most: sheet goods, framing lumber, hardwood, or a mix?
- ☐ Does the saw have to move between locations, or will it stay in one place?
- ☐ How much space do you have for the saw, an outfeed area and dust collection?
- ☐ What is the full budget, including a good blade, safety gear and accessories?
2. Choose a type
- ☐ Benchtop or compact: light, low cost, limited capacity.
- ☐ Jobsite or portable: made to travel, with a folding stand.
- ☐ Hybrid: a steadier platform for a home workshop.
- ☐ Cabinet: heavy and accurate, for a fixed workshop.
- ☐ Cordless: only if power access is a real problem for you.
3. Compare the specifications that matter
- ☐ Rip capacity to the right of the blade, and how the fence locks.
- ☐ Maximum depth of cut at 90 and 45 degrees.
- ☐ Motor rating, and whether your circuit can supply it.
- ☐ Table size and flatness, and a standard miter slot.
- ☐ Dado capacity, if you plan to cut grooves or joinery.
- ☐ Weight and stand design, if you will carry it.
- ☐ Dust port size and how it connects to a vacuum.
4. Check the safety features
- ☐ A riving knife that moves with the blade.
- ☐ A blade guard you can fit and remove easily.
- ☐ Anti-kickback pawls.
- ☐ A switch you can reach and stop quickly.
- ☐ Optional: a blade-braking or flesh-detection system, and what replacement parts cost after it triggers.
5. Budget for the extras
- ☐ A quality general-purpose or ripping blade.
- ☐ Push sticks and push blocks.
- ☐ A featherboard for guided cuts.
- ☐ Outfeed support for long boards and sheets.
- ☐ Dust collection and a dust mask.
- ☐ Eye and hearing protection.
6. Before you buy
- ☐ Read the manual online to confirm what is included.
- ☐ Check the warranty and the return policy.
- ☐ Look up the current price and availability with the retailer.
